Last year I was fortunate enough to be part of a group on the Florida International University campus known as Global Community Engagement, and participated in a service trip to the Dominican Republic to aid disadvantaged children there. The experience I had there was absolutely life changing for me. Not only did I realize the value of aiding those less fortunate, but it being my first time out of the country, my eyes were also opened to a whole new perspective of poverty and need. Many of these children are homeless, and most lack an education and parental support. The impact the children there had on me, and the impact my organization had on them (through monetary donations, education, character building, and simply a listening ear) will stay with me forever. The project is what allowed me to realize that my true passion lies in helping others in need in any way I can.
