Dear friends and family,
As many of you know, this past Spring Break I went to Santiago, DR to do volunteer work for a week. Many of you saw pictures and heard stories, yet some of you may have no idea. I have a passion for philanthropy and helping others. I'm so grateful for the opportunities that have presented themselves to me, and even more grateful for taking advantage of them. I have become a better me through helping others.
With that said, while I was in DR in March the opportunity presented itself to not only go back the following year, but to be the executive director. Although this is my last and definitely most difficult semester, I couldn't say no. Now I have a group of 17 wonderful people who I will be bringing to Santiago with me. We are Global Community Engagement which started 12 years ago at Florida Gulf Coast. Six years ago a student who is now our advisor for the trip brought GCE to FIU with her. For 12 years students have been going to stay in the same hostel, in the same city working with the same organization Accion Callejera. Accion Callejera has a focus on boys who live and/or work on the street. AC gives these boys a place to eat, shower, get medical treatment, psychological counseling, a place to do their laundry etc. Unfortunately, AC is not funded by the government and depends on groups like GCE to keep them going. In preparation for our trip next year, we as a group have to fundraise $11,000 just to make it over there. Each participant with an allocated amount to raise on their own. That's where you all come in, I need your help! But not only do I need your help, so do the kids in DR. Any amount makes a difference, whether it be $5 or $50. If you make a donation, you will be receiving a letter from GCE recognizing your donation as we are tax exempt.

Como muchos de ustedes saben, las vacaciones de primavera pasado fui a Santiago, República Dominicana para hacer trabajo voluntario durante una semana. Muchos de ustedes vieron fotos y escucharon historias, sin embargo, algunos de ustedes no tienen ni idea. Tengo una pasión por la filantropía y ayudar a los demás. Estoy tan agradecida por las oportunidades que se han presentado a mí, y aún más agradecida para tomar ventaja de ellos. Me he convertido en una persona mejor a través de ayudar a los demás.
Con eso dicho, mientras yo estaba en RD en Marzo se presentó la oportunidad no sólo para volver al año siguiente, pero para ser la director ejecutivo de la organización. Aunque este es mi último semestre y definitivamente el más difícil, no podía decir que no. Ahora tengo un grupo de 17 personas maravillosas que voy a traer a Santiago conmigo. Esta organización de la comunidad global comenzó hace 12 años en la universidad Florida Gulf Coast. Hace seis años, un estudiante que es ahora nuestra asesor para el viaje trajo la organización a mi universidad con ella. Durante 12 años los estudiantes se han quedado en el mismo hostal, en la misma ciudad, conla organización Acción Callejera mismo. Acción Callejera (AC) se centra en los niños que viven y / o trabajan en la calle. AC da a estos niños un lugar para comer, bañarse, atención médica, orientación psicológica, un lugar para lavar la ropa, etc. Desafortunadamente, AC no es financiado por el gobierno y depende de grupos como nosotros para mantenerlas en funcionamiento. En preparación para nuestro próximo viaje, nosotros como grupo tenemos que recaudar fondos de 12,000 dólares. Cada participante con una cantidad asignada para recaudar por su cuenta. Ahí es donde ustedes me pueden ayudar, necesito tu ayuda! Pero no soy la única que necesita su ayuda, también los niños en la RD. Cualquier cantidad ayuda. Si usted hace una donación, usted va a recibir una carta porque nuestra organización reconoce su donación a medida que están exentas de impuestos.
